Gliela avevo promessa, ed eccola qui l’intervista a Dan Stanton, l’ideatore delle stanton bikes… hardtail da paura che mi sono regalato l’anno scorso e che , mmm, quantebbella!

1) Let’s talk about you in few words to explain our visitors who you are and what you do.
A1) I’m just one of those chaps who never gave up bikes, I used to ride bikes with my mates in a group as a kid. We used to cut around the streets jumping down flights of stairs and doing trials tricks everywhere, we also lived near a big castle, so we would ride there and play on the rocks and walls and also hit the jumps that we made in the woods.
1) Parliamo di te in poche parole per spiegare ai nostri lettori chi sei e cosa fai.
A1) Sono solo uno di quei tipi che non hanno mai rinunciato alle bici, da bambino andavo in bici con i miei compagni in gruppo. Avevamo l’abitudine di tagliare le strade saltando su rampe di scale e cercando di fare tricks di prova dappertutto. Vivevamo anche vicino a un grande castello, così andavamo spesso a giocare e raidare su rocce e muri, oltre a saltare dalle rampe che costruivamo nei boschi.
2) Are you a biker too? One day you just say yourself: hardtail frames don’t satisfy me too much. Well, i’ll do it myself! Or not?
A2) I’d ridden quite a few different bikes by the time i was 28 and i decided that none of them actually fitted my riding style. I loved the way 4-cross bikes felt when going down the trail however they were absolutely awful to climb on. I also enjoyed the way an XC bike on the climbs but I felt they where pathetic when it came to downhill, so I designed the Slackline and got it made.
2) Un giorno ti sei detto: le hardtails non mi soddisfano. Bene, ne farò da solo! O no?
A2) Avevo utilizzato un bel po’ di bici diverse fino all’età di 28 anni, quando ho capito che nessuna di loro si adattava al mio stile di guida. Mi piaceva molto il modo in cui le 4-cross andavano in discesa, ma erano assolutamente orribili da pedalare in salita. Mi piaceva molto anche il modo in cui una bici XC andava in salita, ma era noiosa quando si trattava di scendere: così ho progettato la Slackline e l’ho realizzata.
3) So, steel is real?
A3) But Ti is Fly! I love designing in both of these materials, in my opinion they are the ideal materials for Hardtail frames. The better the quality of the steel, the thinner the gauge and the better the right characteristics. Titanium works a little differently as it is so malleable. Designing in Titanium you are adding material over the steel design and adding more millimetres to the diameters, making the frame stronger as well as stiffening it to and in exactly the points you are looking for.
3) Quindi, steel is real?
A3) Ma il Titanio vola! Adoro disegnare in entrambi questi materiali, a mio parere sono i materiali ideali per i telai Hardtail. Migliore è la qualità dell’acciaio, più sottile è il calibro e migliori sono le caratteristiche. Il titanio funziona in modo leggermente diverso in quanto è più malleabile: progettando in Titanio si aggiunge materiale a quanto progettato in acciaio e si aggiungono più millimetri ai diametri, rendendo il telaio più resistente e irrigidendolo esattamente nei punti che serve.
4) More difficult to project a frame on cad or to find a frame builder?
A4) The Cad designing process was a little hard at the beginning but I learnt some basics pretty quickly and then found a software that really help me out. Organizing the manufacturer was a different story! It was very hard as nobody wanted to tell me any information about where they got their frames made. Eventually I used a bit of lateral thinking and saw a little opening outside the box. Once I’d prototyped a few frames I managed to understand how small incremental changes in geometry feel in the body.
4) E’ stato più difficile progettare un telaio su CAD o trovare un produttore?
A4) Il processo di progettazione su Cad è stato un po’ difficile all’inizio, ma ho imparato alcune nozioni di base abbastanza in fretta e poi ho trovato un software che mi aiuta nella progettazione. Trovare il produttore era una storia diversa! È stato molto difficile visto che nessuno voleva darmi informazioni su dove avesse realizzato i telai. Alla fine ho cercato di trovare nuove idee e di uscire un po’ dagli schemi classici. Una volta creato un prototipo di alcuni fotogrammi, sono riuscito a capire come piccoli cambiamenti incrementali nella geometria del telaio abbiamo effetti efficaci sul telaio nel suo insieme.
5) Your next dream?
A5) I’m currently working on a new full suspension frame. It’s been a real learning curve, and extremely exciting. We are currently (few months later) looking at having the first sample in about six weeks time, we are developing and making the sample frame in my friends fabrication shop. Once we’ve done it there, we will then offer 3-D CAD drawings to our partnering factory in Taiwan and then get them to make us a few samples for production run testing.
5) Il tuo prossimo sogno?
A5) Attualmente sto lavorando ad un nuovo telaio full suspension. È stata un’esperienza appagante ed estremamente eccitante. Attualmente (qualche mese fa) stiamo valutando di avere il primo campione in circa sei settimane, stiamo sviluppando e realizzando il campione nel negozio di produzione di amici. Una volta che l’avremo fatto, offriremo i disegni CAD 3D al nostro stabilimento di produzione a Taiwan e li porteremo a fare alcuni test.
6) Have you ever been in Italy for riding?
A6) Yes! In fact the switchback Titanium video edit we produced was in Italy at Lake Garda! Some seriously rocky fun!
6) Sei mai stato in Italia per raidare? Se ci sei stato, ti aspetteremo la prossima volta…
A6) Si, va bene! Tra l’altro, iI video per la presentazione della Switchback in titanio è stato prodotto in Italia, sul Lago di Garda! Che divertimento su quelle rocce!
7) Do you sponsor some riders?
A7) We sponsor a few riders with frames but we don’t pay any wages for riders. We basically support them with discounts on components and free frames, we then invite them to be in our edits.
8) Sponsorizzate alcuni riders?
A8) Si, supportiamo alcuni riders fornendo loro i telai, ma non paghiamo loro alcun salario. Sostanzialmente li supportiamo con sconti su componenti e telai gratuiti, e li invitiamo a partecipare ai nostri eventi / video.
9) What enjoy you about your activity?
A9) Writing to me are used to be all about tricks jumps and mucking about. It still means this to me a little however, as I have matured I’ve started to see cycling is a great way to get some alone time from my family (who I obviously love dearly). I love to drive my van somewhere pretty and go for a big long loop on the bike and think about my life, and when I get back to the van I cook myself some food, relax and watch some TV series, then fall asleep, I’ll then go for a climb or a ride in the morning.
9) Cosa ti diverte della tua attività?
A9) Chi mi scrive, mi parla spesso di tricks, salti e cazzeggi vari. Questo significa ancora molto per me, ma ora che sono maturato, ho iniziato a vedere il fatto di andare in bici come un ottimo modo per avere un po’ di tempo per stare da soli. (anche se ovviamente amo molto la mia famiglia). Adoro guidare il mio furgone in un posto carino e fare un lungo giro sulla bici e pensare alla mia vita, e quando torno al furgone mi cucino del cibo, mi rilasso e guardo qualche serie TV, poi mi addormento. E al mattino seguente fare una scalata o un giro in bici.
10) You have distributor around the worldt?
A10) We have a distributor in Japan, we also have one in Malaysia and we are also organizing one in Singapore. When it comes to English-speaking markets and Europe we sell direct and deal with all customer enquiries direct also.
10) Hai un distributore in tutto il mondo?
A10) Abbiamo un distributore in Giappone, uno in Malesia e ne stiamo organizzando uno anche a Singapore. Vendiamo e gestiamo direttamente tutte le richieste dei clienti che provengono da Paesi in lingua inglese e in Europa.
